Subaru has redefined the Impreza for 2012. From its look to performance, the Impreza has improved.
The 2012 Impreza is powered by a 2.0L, DOHC FB20 engine. It is heavier than the previous 2.5-liter EB engine due to increased complexity of features like its double-overhead cams (instead of the SOHC 2.5-liter), common rail injectors, and oversquare stroke with asymmetrical conrods. This new motor creates 148 horsepower (22HP less than the predacessor). With the CVT and lighter weight it still gets to 60 miles per hour in 9.8 seconds – a 0.3-second improvement. Even the 50 mph to 70 mph speed is improved.
The motor and the sleeker body get EPA ratings of 27 MPG city and 36 MPG highway. A large part of this is due to the new Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission. This is a 30% improvement. The manual transmission gets 25 city/33 highway. The Lineartronic CVT is smaller and lighter than that on the Legacy and Outback, and engineered specifically for this application. The Impreza comes with a smaller tank by 2.3 gallons. Even with the reduction, it can still potentially go 520 miles.
The expected landing date for the 2012 Impreza in Omaha is sometime around October 2012. This date is likely to change due to the earthquake and natural distasters affecting Subaru in Japan.
It is anticipated that if the AWD Impreza sells poorly, there will be a FWD model offered. But given Subaru’s current boost in sales, it is too hard to speculate.
